Geisel, Theodore Seuss - "Dr. Seuss". Fantastic original full-length drawing of The Cat in the Hat signed "Dr. Seuss" at lower right, 8 x 6½ in. The Cat looks very debonair in his tall (pale) red and white hat and red bowtie. He carries a blue umbrella in his right hand and checks with his left hand to see if it is raining. Archivally matted and framed to an overall size of 18 x 16 in. Theodore Geisel wrote and illustrated The Cat in the Hat to promote elementary literacy by capturing the imagination of six and seven year olds. The book was published in 1957 and may well be the most popular Dr. Seuss book. This is an enchanting piece.

Shepard, Ernest H - Original Drawing of Christopher Robin and Winnie-the-Pooh (1879-1976) English artist and cartoonist. Best known for illustrations of children's books, especially A.A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh and Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows. Original pen and ink drawing of Christopher Robin and Winnie-the-Pooh signed with Shepard's initials "EHS" at lower right, 6½ x 7½ in. This charming sketch shows Winnie-the-Pooh following behind and emulating Christopher Robin's step. Archivally matted and framed to an overall size of 18 x 19¼ in. Rare. Original drawings of Christopher Robin and Winnie-the-Pooh have sold for as much as £60,000 in the UK.

Lot 72
Stalin, Joseph (1879-1953) Georgian-born Soviet military and political leader. With the forced exile of Trotsky, he became the successor of Lenin and was General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union's Central Committee from 1922 and Premier of the USSR from 1941 until his death in 1953. One of the most ruthless dictators of all time, his rule was marked by terrror, forced agricultural collectivization that displaced millions, and bloody purges that stripped the military of desperately-needed leadership in World War II. With the increasing paranoia of his later years, the dictator was apparently planning yet another purge when he died.
Ornate Document Signed ("J. Stalin") in Russian, 6 pp, 13¾ x 9¾ in, Moscow, 1942. Awarding the Stalin Prize, Second Class, to Alexei P. Shehurdin for his achievements in agricultural research. Gold hammer and sickle emblem on cover; red and gold lettering; and embossed seal of the Soviet Union on second page above title. The award presentation is on the fourth page and is boldly signed in purple ink to the right of the purple, stamped seal. Slight smudge to last letter of signature; lower blank right corner of last page is clipped; otherwise, fine.

John Speed Map of Virginia And Maryland. By John Speed, London, 1676. 19½ x 15 inches. Hand colored map of Virginia and Maryland, engraved by Francis Lamb. It first appeared in the enlarged edition of Speed's Atlas in 1676.
This is one of the first maps to incorporate the information from Augustine Herrman' s "Virginia and Maryland As it is Planted and Inhabited this present Year 1670 Surveyed and Exactly Drawne by the Only Labour & Endeavour of Augustin Herrman Boehemiensis." An English-text description of Maryland and Virginia appears on the verso.
The majority of the cartographic information derives from John Smith's earlier map of Virginia. Speed's four maps of the English colonies in America were the first "new" set of printed maps of the Colonies to appear in a commercial atlas after the English took control of the territory which became the British Colonies in North America and later the first 13 states.

Lot 131
[Society of the Cincinnati] Eagle Insignia. Gold eagle that belonged to Elihu Church (1881-1963), who became a member of the New York chapter of the Society of the Cincinnati in 1912 by right of descent from original member James Stewart, Captain, 5th Regiment, NY Line. Church was the first, and apparently only, hereditary member on this line. He did not inherit membership from his father, so he would have acquired himself any eagle that he owned. He likely first purchased a New York eagle, since this was the society to which he belonged. He served as president of the New York chapter of the Society of the Cincinnati in 1938.
This eagle is c. 1940s, in the style of Myers #67, which is a variation on the Connecticut eagle (#66, made by Braxmar & Co.). The gold is probably 14-18 karat gold based. Height: 41.64 mm. Width: 30.50mm. Obverse: Head to left, red eye, distinct crest to head, white enamel on tail; green enamel on wreath and branches. Tiffany medallion with gold on white: "OMNIA: RELINQUIT: SERVARE: REPUBLICAM" and showing three senators presenting a sword to Cincinnatus, whose wife and two children are behind him. Angle of roof points to "R" in "SERVARE." Reverse: Tiffany medallion with Cincinnatus at plow, Fame above, sunrise behind, and ship and building in distance; motto is "SOCIETAS: CINCINNATORUM: INSTITUTA: AD 1783." Tail has three layers, each with five leaves enameled white.
From the late 19th century, eagles were no longer handmade but cast from dies. The two-sided medallion is separate from the eagle itself; made in two pieces from two dies, it was then attached to the eagle. The enamel on the medallion, or other decorations, were customized, but the die-based attributes remained the same. Dates given in Myers (The Insignia of the Society of the Cincinnati by Minor Myers, Jr., 1998) usually refer to the first year a particular eagle design was used but the dies were used for years afterwards.

Jean Harlow. Luminous 11 x 14 in. photo, with original white ink signature ("Mitchell NY") by photographer Herbert Mitchell at lower left. Miss Harlow looks pensive as she looks over her left shoulder. Her face and hair stand out against her dark clothing and the dark background. Mitchell took this photo of Miss Harlow when she came to his studio to have photos made for an ad for Milgrim's (see following three lots). While she was there, he took the opportunity to make this lovely photo, which was not used commercially and was never released to the public. The only other copy was in Jean's mother's private collection. This photo has a repaired scratch in the dark area at bottom center. Framed to an overall size of 14¾ x 17½ in.
Born Harlean Harlow Carpenter (1911-1937) and known as the "Blonde Bombshell" and the "Platinum Blonde," Miss Harlow was known for her beauty and comedic talent. She died tragically at the age of 26 from renal failure.

"Over the Rainbow" Piano Score Signed by Garland, Arlen, and Harburg. Piano score for the iconic song, ranked as the greatest movie song of all time, signed on the cover by Judy Garland, who sang the song in her role as Dorothy Gale in the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz, by Harold Arlen, who wrote the lyrics, and by E.Y. Harburg, who wrote the music. "Over the Rainbow" became Miss Garland's signature song. She sang it throughout her life, until her death in 1969. The score is in fine condition, with very minor toning.

Complete Psittacosaurus Dinosaur. Psittacosaurus is a very important dinosaur that lived between 120-130 million years ago in Liaoning Province, Central Asia. Psittacosaurus is important as being the oldest ancestor of the famous horned dinosaurs such as Triceratops. Psittacosaurus did not have horns but did possess a horned beak and bony Jugals (back of the upper jaw) which are characteristic of only ceroptopsian (horned) dinosaurs. Psittacosaurus is the most studied of all dinosaurs because it is known from all stages from hatchling to adult. With eggs about 3 inches long, the hatchlings were about 6 inches long and adult Psittacosaurs were over 4 feet long. This juvenile 30.5 inch Psittacosaurus is about 70% complete with only two bones in the right arm, all rib bones and about half of the delicate neural spines being professionally restored. The great preservation of the small delicate bones occurred because this dinosaur was instantly buried under volcanic ash over 120 million years ago, a sort of dinosaurean Pompei The all important skull is 4 x 3.5 inches completely removed from its hard stony matrix which took over 20 hours of careful detailed work. It is one of the very best skulls found not distorted or compressed and with some real teeth on both sides of the skull. This medium size complete dinosaur would make an excellent desk top or shelf display and comes standing atop a 11 x 9 inch faux rock standing on one leg All of the metal rods have been inserted inside of the bones resulting in a very natural free standing specimen with the only visible rods being in the attachment of the back leg. The skull and legs can easily be removed from the matrix for examination and study.
