Lot 499

1803 S-264 R4+ Large Date, Small Fraction. PCGS graded VF-25. Slightly glossy uniform dark steel and olive brown. The surfaces appear smooth and the eye appeal is excellent, but a glass reveals fine granularity that covers the planchet, strongest in the fields on the reverse. No verdigris. The only notable marks are a couple dull, very faint diagonal scratches hidden in the toning close before the chin. The date is bold and the legends are clear. MDS, Breen state II. The arcing die crack at the upper left of the reverse is obvious but not strong. A very nice example of this tough "Redbook" variety. Called VF35 net VF20 and tied for CC#4 in the Noyes census, his photo #26666. Our grade is VF25+ sharpness net VF20. Comes with a nice provenance. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Pop 1; 2 finer, 1 in 30, 1 in 35. Estimate Value $40,000 - UP
