Lot 406

1800 C-1 R2 VG8. Sharpness near VF30 but dark and covered with uniform moderate roughness. No marks and verdigris, and the toning is a slightly glossy dark olive brown and steel. E-MDS, Manley state 2.0, with obvious swelling and die clashmarks over NITE. What make this piece special is that it was struck over a spoiled large cent, and that cent was an off-center reverse brockage error. Obvious undertype from the large cent shows in the center of the obverse where ON and EN from ONE CENT are clearly visible to the unaided eye. On the reverse there is an offset arc of incuse large cent dentils from the rim right of OF down to the 2 in the denominator. A nice mint error that points to a time in our history when labor was cheap and planchet material was scarce. Estimate Value $800 - UP

Realized $823
