Sale 98

Lot 259

1799/8 S-188 R4 Overdate 9 over 8 PCGS graded VG10, CAC Approved. Medium chocolate brown and steel. The surfaces are smooth but they are a bit dull thanks to a thin layer of natural oxidation. Just a few minor contact marks, all consistent with the grade. The best identifying marks are a dull diagonal nick through the top of the L in LIBERTY, an arc of impressed dentils just off the lower end of the hair ribbon, and a planchet flake hidden in the hair near the neck. MDS with the usual die clashmarks on the reverse but no die cracks on the obverse. The date is full and clear, and the legends are complete and easily readable. The overdate feature is obvious under magnification. A very nice lower-grade example of this tough overdate. Our grade is VG8+, very close to VG10. The attribution and Heard provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 3 finer, 1 in VF, 1 in 45, 1 in 58 for the variety. PCGS #36131. Estimate Value $10,000 - UP
Ex Legend Numismatics 6/24/2008-Gene Heard Collection.

Realized $14,100
