1798 S-148 R2 Style I Hair, Large 8 PCGS graded VF35. Attractive glossy chocolate brown and steel. The surfaces are smooth and attractive, void of any corrosion or verdigris. There is light wear on the devices and only minor contact marks consistent with the grade. The only notable mark is a diagonal nick in the hair at the forehead. E-MDS, Breen state III, with minor die cracks on both sides but no cud breaks. The spur on the right side of the 9 is sharp. Struck with the reverse misaligned slightly to K-2.5 while the obverse is centered on the planchet. Called VF25 and tied for CC#8 in the Noyes census, his photo #36614. Our grade is VF20+, close to VF25. A nice cent that comes with an equally nice provenance. The attribution and Downing-Heard provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3 in VF, 2 finer for the variety. PCGS #36023. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP
