Augustus. Silver Denarius (3.84 g), 27 BC-AD 14. Colonia Patricia(?), ca. 19 BC. CAESA[R] AVGVSTVS, bare head of Augustus to right. Reverse: SIGNIS RECEPTIS above and below, S P Q R around, round shield inscribed CL V between legionary legionary eagle and standard. RIC 86a; BN 1132; BMC 417; RSC 265. Lustrous. Extremely Fine. Estimate Value $1,000 - 1,300
The reverse shows the clipeus virtutis, the shield of valor, decreed to Augustus by the Senate in 27 BC. Like the corona civica, it was awarded for saving the life of a fellow citizen.
