Roman Judaea, Circa 4th-6th Century AD, "Baby Feeder" Glass Pitcher. Blown from thick deep leaf green colored glass, the vessel has broad funnel mouth and narrow neck atop a flattened ovoid body. A single trailed handle at the back attaches in two places and the short spout with "fire polished" (i.e. smooth and rounded) edges to its rim. Additional ornament of thin trailed glass ribbon wraps about the enterior of the mouth. Intact and pristine. This remarkable glass vessel is a splendid and exotic example of the ancient glassmaker's craft. Height: 5¾". Estimate Value $800 - 900
Ex Goldberg's Manuscript Sale of Sept. 20, 2003, lot 483; Ex June 1986, Superior Galleries Sale of the bankrupt assets of the International Diamond Corporation. The ancient Roman glass was acquired thru Rafi Brown in the early 1980's.
