Lot 207

1783 Chalmers Shilling with Short Worm Breen-1011 PCGS graded VF30, CAC Approved. Attractive medium steel gray with lighter silvery gray toning on the devices. The surfaces are smooth and this piece offers great eye appeal for the grade. The strike is well balanced and there are only a few minor contact marks. The only notable marks are a line of very light scuffs in the wreath under LIS in ANNAPOLIS, and you will need a good glass to see them. Obvious doubling is visible on most of the letters of CHALMERS. These were struck by John Chalmers, a silversmith in Annapolis, Maryland, to help provide an acceptable alternative to the clipped Spanish Colonial "bits" that were prevalent at the time. The Heard provenance is noted on the PCGS label. Listed on page 53 in the "Redbook." Estimate Value $5,000 - UP
Ex John Agre (CoinRaritiesOnline) 9/22/2012-Gene Heard Collection.
