Roman Judaea, 3rd-4th Century AD, Sprinkler Flask. This blown flask in light green glass is rather thick and quite substantial in heft. The piriform body has six vertical ribs at regular intervals. The foot of the bottle consists of a ring of short, drawn out nubs. The mouth is wide and funnel shaped with and encircling flange beneath. Within the neck is a constricted ring and a small central opening designed to restrict the flow of the vessel's precious contents (perfumed oil). Exceptionally preserved, the bottle has some blackish patina, but is mostly translucent with a silvery, opalescent iridescence and some smaller areas of transparent violet and coppery green. A splendid and colorful example of a less common shape. Height: 3½". Estimate Value $800 - 1,000
