Lot 91

1828 N-10 R1 Small Date PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Lustrous steel brown and olive with bluish steel overtones on the reverse and nearly 10% of the planchet showing faded mint red. A very attractive cent, nearly flawless. The best identifying marks, and you need a glass to see them, are a tiny planchet flake or dull pinprick in the field over star 12 and a tiny planchet flake on the rim over the second T in STATES (as struck). EDS. The fine repunching on the right edges of the 1 & 8 in the date is still visible. A very nice example of the Small Date version of 1828 large cents. Our grade is MS60. Noyes says MS60 net AU55 and tied for CC#12, his photo #26836. The attribution and Koshkarian provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 4 finer, 1 in 63+, 3 in 64 for the variety. Estimate Value $3,000 - UP
Ex Henry C. Kingman, Stack's 12/10/1965:92-C. Douglas Smith-Jules Reiver, Heritage 1/24/2006:19901 (includes the Smith and Reiver collection envelopes).
