Lot 59

1808 S-277 R2 PCGS graded AU58. 12-Star Obverse. Lustrous medium chocolate and steel brown. Satiny mint frost covers the fields and protected areas thanks to very fine die flowlines that cover both sides. Virtually perfect, free of any corrosion, marks, or verdigris. This cent offers mint state eye appeal but a glass reveals a touch of very light friction on the highest points of the devices. The only marks are a small spot of slightly lighter steel brown toning under the left end of the line under CENT and another smaller one on the berry under the T in UNITED. Late die state, Breen state VIII. Star 1 is very weak due to die failure at the opposing area on the reverse, and star 2 is quite weak as well (the so-called 12-star obverse die state). In addition, there is a small internal cud break inside the D in UNITED and a thin but clear rim cud break involving 3 dentils over that N. A very attractive example, one of the finest of the late (12-Star) die state. Our grade is AU50+. The attribution and Koshkarian provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 3 finer, 1 in 63, 1 in 64, 1 in 66 for the variety. Estimate Value $10,000 - UP
