Lot 49

1803 S-265 R4 Large Date & Fraction PCGS graded XF40. Rather glossy olive brown and dark steel with lighter reddish steel brown toning in the protected areas on both sides. The color is somewhat unusual but there is no corrosion or verdigris. The notable marks are a minor rim bruise just above the tip of the bust (difficult to see in the slab), three small nicks right of the D in UNITED, and a dull diagonal nick between the feet of the T & E in STATES. E-MDS, Breen state II, with a fine die crack that arcs from the E in UNITED to the left edge of the O in OF and weakly to the dentils at either end. The strike is strong except for the area at STAT where the die is starting to fail. A decent example of the tough Large Date and Fraction variety. Plated in the 1925 Newcomb reference on the cents of 1801-1803. Our grade is net VF25. Noyes says VF35 net VF25 and tied for CC#7, his photo #26874. Bland says VF25 as well but tied for CC#8 in his census. Comes with an impressive provenance. The attribution and Koshkarian provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 2 finer, 1 in 53, 1 in 58 for the variety. Estimate Value $7,000 - UP
