1802 S-228 R2 Error Fraction 1/000 PCGS graded MS63 Brown, CAC Approved. Choice lustrous medium steel brown and chocolate with faint hints of very faded mint color peeking through in a few of the protected areas. Mint frost covers this cent, even the highest points of the devices, and it offers outstanding eye appeal. Nearly flawless. A trio of microscopic ticks in a line under the L in LIBERTY and a tiny planchet flake on the tip of the leaf under C in AMERICA are the best identifying marks, but they are barely visible with a glass. E-MDS, Breen state II late. Die roughness (Breen calls it "scaling") covers most of the obverse fields and the bust with similar scaling at STA in STATES. A radial die crack reaches from the rim to the D in UNITED but it does not extend through the wreath, and clear die clashmarks show on both sides. This cent is the plate coin for the variety in the Breen encyclopedia on early date large cents. Our grade is MS63, same as the PCGS grade. Appears that PCGS may have shot a bit low on this one. Noyes says MS65 Choice and tied for finest known of the variety. This is a beautiful, very impressive example of the 1/000 Error Fraction variety worthy of the finest registry collection. And it comes with a nice provenance. The attribution and Koshkarian provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer for the variety. Estimate Value $25,000 - UP
