Lot 37

1801 S-219 R2 3-Error Reverse PCGS graded MS62 Brown. Attractive medium chocolate brown and steel with lighter steel brown toning in protected areas. Both sides are covered with satiny mint frost and the eye appeal of this cent is outstanding. There is no wear, not even on the highest points of the devices, but there are some minor contact marks. A few faint scuffs near the dentils off the lower end of the hair ribbon, a pinprick and diagonal hairline scratch in the field before the chin, and a microscopic planchet chip on the throat (as struck) are the only notable marks. Otherwise this cent is choice. MDS, Breen state V, with two die cracks at UNIT to the fraction and obvious die clashmarks on both sides. All 3 of the die-cutter errors are bold (Missing Left Stem, Error Denominator 000, and "U" over and Inverted "U" in UNITED). A superior example of this very popular "Redbook" variety. Our grade is MS60 net AU55. Noyes says MS60 net AU50 and tied for CC#2. Bland says AU55 and CC#2 in the Breen/Bland census. Comes with a great provenance that has been traced back more than a century. A small "B" was carefully written into the field near the dentils right of the F in OF using dark ink, perhaps to identify a prior owner, Harold Bareford. The attribution and Koshkarian provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer for the variety. Estimate Value $30,000 - UP
