Lot 353

1798 S-154 R4+ Large 8 with Style I Hair PCGS graded VG10, CAC Approved. Attractive glossy medium chocolate brown with smooth surfaces and no notable contact marks. This cent was struck two times. The first strike was about 15% off center to K-4. The cent was flipped over and struck a second time, this strike being properly centered on the planchet. Bold evidence of the first strike is visible on both sides, and an indent from a second planchet is located in the dentils right of the fraction. LDS, Breen state III, with a die crack from the bust to the rim and obvious swelling in a few places on the reverse. Traces of diagonal reeding can be found on the edge, which is not uncommon on some 1797 & 1798 varieties. An attractive example of a wonderful mint error. Our grade is VG10+. The attribution and Fricke provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 2 finer, 1 in 50, 1 in 64 for the variety. Estimate Value $200 - UP
Ex David Johnson.
