Lot 31

1799 S-189 R2 PCGS graded VF30. Mostly glossy chocolate and olive brown. The planchet appears perfectly smooth to the unaided eye, but a glass reveals very fine roughness in the fields and protected areas on the obverse while the reverse is perfectly smooth. No spots or verdigris, only a few trivial contact marks. The notable ones are a thin vertical nick on the forehead, a collection of faint scratches hidden in the field before the chin, and a diagonal nick over the left top of the T in CENT. Both the date and LIBERTY are strong, which is a big plus since many of this variety were struck with one or the other quite weak due to axially misaligned dies. MDS, Breen state II late or III early. The irregular lump over the T in CENT is strong but there is no evidence of crumbling in the dentils on the reverse. A sharp, attractive example of this date. Our grade is VF25. Noyes says VF25 net VF20 and tied for CC#6, his photo #28125. The attribution and Koshkarian provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 3 finer, 1 in 40, 1 in 45, 1 in 61 for the variety. Estimate Value $50,000 - UP
