Lot 29

1798 S-166 R1 Large 8, Style II Hair PCGS graded AU58, CAC Approved. Frosty light to medium chocolate brown and steel with traces of lighter steel brown toning in some of the protected areas. Peeps of very faded mint color remain visible on the reverse and this cent offers outstanding eye appeal. No spots or stains, only a few trivial marks. A very tiny planchet lamination at the rim over the second S in STATES can help identify this cent, but you will need a glass to see it. E-MDS, Breen state II, a die state that is earlier than most of this variety (Breen state I with an uncracked reverse may not exist). There are fine die clashmarks on both sides and the always-present crack that arcs through the fraction and E in UNITED is clear. Softly struck at the top of LIBER and on the bust tip, as usual. The reverse is rotated 20 degrees CCW from the normal head-to-foot orientation. Our grade is AU55. Noyes says AU50 and tied for CC#8, his photo #20497. The attribution and Koshkarian provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 5 finer for the variety. Estimate Value $6,000 - UP
