Lot 283

1794 S-43 R2 VF20. Very attractive glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. Looks flawless to the unaided eye and deserving of a grade slightly higher, but a glass reveals myriad faint hairline scratches covering the portrait and parts of the obverse fields. No roughness or additional marks. M-LDS, Breen state IV. Both dies are cracked, and the crack through the U in UNITED is quite strong causing the right half of the letter to be obliterated thanks to swelling and wear. Some examples in this die state come with the reverse rotated 45 degrees CW, but the dies are perfectly aligned head-to-foot on this piece. A nice cent in spite of the faint obverse hairlines. Estimate Value $1,000 - UP
Ex Allen E. McDonald-Jake Hendin-Jeff Oliphant-Del Bland 4/1988-Joel Spingarn-Del Bland-Willard J. Carmel, Superior 9/7/1997:165-Phil Moore 5/2015-Chuck Heck Collection (includes the Moore collection envelope and Carmel lot ticket).
