Lot 275

1794 S-39 R6 VG7. Sharpness VG10 but there is a patch of shallow corrosion in the field before the portrait. The patch has been lightly abraded to minimize the roughness but a few microscopic specks of greenish verdigris remain visible. The remainder of the planchet is smooth and there are only minor contact marks consistent with the grade. The notable marks are a shallow scrape on the 179 that significantly weakens the 7 (although it remains readable), a similar scrape on the front edge of the neck, a small planchet void right of the second S in STATES, and a nick or planchet chip on the bottom of the E in CENT. Mostly glossy medium chocolate and steel with slightly lighter steel brown toning on the devices. MDS, Breen state II, with a die crack arcing from the dentils left of the denominator through the left ribbon end to the tip of the leaf under UN where the crack fades away. The date is readable and the legends are complete. Graded VG10 net VG7 and tied for CC#11 in the Bland census. Noyes says VG10 net G6 and CC#13, his photo #39986. Estimate Value $5,000 - UP
Ex Gerald Franz (who acquired it unattributed) 3/1999-Henry T. Hettger 8/1999-Chuck Heck Collection.
