Lot 26

1798/7 S-150 R5 Overdate Small 8 over 7 PCGS graded VF20. Style I Hair. Glossy dark chocolate brown and olive with uniform microscopic granularity hidden under the natural glossy toning. The highpoints are a slightly lighter shade of chocolate brown and the eye appeal is decent in spite of the imperfect surfaces. There are a few specks of verdigris tucked into protected areas, mostly on the reverse, but it takes a glass to see them. The only contact marks are a few tiny rim nicks at NI in UNITED, a very light rim bruise at the first T in STATES, and a pair of tiny pinpricks over the T in CENT. None of these marks is distracting. MDS, Breen state III, with a few fine die cracks on the reverse and minor swelling at ER in AMERICA. The overdate feature is bold and the legends are strong. Called VF20 and tied for CC#4 honors in the Bland/Breen census. Noyes says F15 ands tied for CC#5, his photo #57177. Our grade is net F15. Comes with a nice provenance that has been traced back a full century. The attribution and Koshkarian provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 1 finer in 45+ for the variety. Estimate Value $5,000 - UP
