Lot 245

1794 S-21 R3 VF25+. Sharpness EF40 or slightly better but the reverse is covered with very fine granularity, especially on the right half, while the obverse is smooth. No verdigris, and the only notable marks are a pair of fine radial scratches from the end of the lowest curl to the dentils and a bit of shallow planchet slag between the I & C in AMERICA. Frosty medium steel brown and light chocolate with slightly darker reddish chocolate in protected areas on the right side of the reverse. E-MDS, Breen state II, with a die crack from the B in LIBERTY to the upper edge of the cap. The repunching under the base of that L is still visible. Sharply struck and attractive in spite of the fine roughness on the reverse. Graded EF45 net VF25 and tied for CC#20 in the Noyes census, his photo #29078. This cent is the plate coin for the variety in the 1893 Frossard-Hays reference on the cents of 1794. The "H" and "D" in HUNDRED are marked in yellow ink to identify this cent as part of the Homer K. Downing Collection, and "H3" is inked onto the edge two times to identify this as the Hays-3 die variety. An important cent that comes with a very nice provenance that reaches back more than 100 years. Estimate Value $2,500 - UP
