Lot 241

1794 S-18b R4 Head of 1793, Edge of 1794 VG8+. Attractive glossy medium chocolate and olive brown with lighter brown toning in protected areas on both sides. The surfaces are smooth and this cent offers excellent eye appeal for the grade. The only notable marks are a small collection of dull pinpricks on the bust, a dull rim nick at the A in STATES, and a rim bruise at ED in UNITED. MDS, Breen state III late. The reverse die has been lapped causing the wreath ribbon right of the fraction to be incomplete, and there is a faint hint of swelling beginning to show under the cap. The date and legends are complete and easily readable, but portions are not strong. A very nice lower-grade example of the popular 1794 Head of 1793 type. Graded VG8 by Del Bland. Comes with a provenance that contains several prominent collectors of large cents. Estimate Value $2,500 - UP
Ex Tom Morley-Denis Loring-Dorothy Paschal-Darwin B. Palmer-John M. Ward, Jr.-Tom Morley-Fred Clymer, Superior 10/6/1991:674-Phil Moore-Chuck Heck Collection (includes the Phil Moore collection envelope and Superior lot ticket).
