Lot 24

1797 S-131 R2 Stemless Wreath PCGS graded AU53, CAC Approved. Glossy chocolate brown and steel with lighter brown toning in protected areas, particularly on the reverse. No spots, stains or corrosion, just a few small contact marks and planchet defects. The only marks visible without the aid of a glass are a small planchet chip in the field over the hair ribbon and a chip out of the rim just right of the second S in STATES, both defects as struck. E-MDS, Breen state II, with a dull vertical die crack in the field before the portrait and a tiny spike hanging down from the tip of the nose. In addition there is a second lighter vertical crack near the dentils right of the first crack. Breen says the second vertical crack (his state IV) begins after the state III crack from the lower curls, but his sequence is reversed. The crack from the lower curls is not present. A superior example of the "Stemless Wreath" version of 1797. Our grade is VF35+, close to EF40. Noyes says EF40 net VF35 and tied for CC#4 honors, his photo #26889. The attribution and Koshkarian provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 2 marginally finer in 55 for the variety. Estimate Value $30,000 - UP
Ex C. Douglas Smith 10/31/1968-Jules Reiver, Heritage 1/24/2006:19331 (includes the Smith and Reiver collection envelopes).
