Lot 239

1794 S-18a R6 Head and Edge of 1793 Fair-2. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate with darker olive brown toning in the protected areas. The surfaces are smooth except for a couple dozen tiny pits scattered over both sides, strongest at the top of the obverse. No verdigris, and the only contact mark is a small, light rim bruise under the 1 in the date. The details on the obverse are stronger than those on the reverse, which is typical for the variety. The date is weak, especially the 4, but it is readable. The edge lettering is complete and easily readable, including the downturned leaf following DOLLAR. Graded Fair-2 and tied for CC#13 in the Noyes census, his photo #36429. Far from perfect, but this was the best example available to Jack Wadlington when he assembled his outstanding collection of early date large cents. Estimate Value $4,000 - UP
Ex Peter Boisvert (who purchased it unattributed at a King of Prussia show)-David Palmer 1997-Jack Wadlington 6/2005-Bob Grellman & Chris McCawley 8/2005-Chuck Heck Collection (includes the Palmer Collection envelope that also served as the Wadlington collection envelope).
