Lot 237

1794 S-17a R5- Head and Edge of 1793 VG7. Sharpness near F12 but myriad light scratches cover much of both sides and there is a collection of contact marks on the upper part of the neck. Minor roughness covers all but the highpoints of the devices, which are smooth, and there are traces of fine verdigris in a few places. Very shallow dents near the rim behind the portrait have caused a minor bulge at UNITED. The surfaces display a decent amount of gloss in spite of the minor roughness. Recolored an attractive medium chocolate brown with a hint of reddish chocolate toning in the protected areas. Very late die state, the latest seen and clearly later than the previous example. Although wear has removed most of the bisecting obverse crack, the crack is much stronger and wider at the end of the pole. This die state is clearly later than Breen's state IV. The date is strong and the legends are clear except for much of ONE CENT thanks to the swelling in that area. A great piece for the die state specialist. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP
Ex Tangible Asset Galleries & Chris McCawley, Superior 2/2001:2117-Chuck Heck Collection (lot ticket included).
