Lot 213

1803 S-253 R2 PCGS Genuine, Unc Details, Cleaning. Lustrous medium brown and light chocolate with darker bluish steel and olive toning covering much of the reverse. Perhaps very lightly cleaned but the eye appeal is excellent. The best identifying marks are a few microscopic ticks on the cheek, a small spot of darker toning at the upper end of the hair ribbon, and a collection of barely visible ticks at D-ST. MDS, Breen state IV, with a strong die crack arcing through STAT, and the area between this crack and the rim is sunken, deepest at STA. Graded AU55 and tied for CC#3 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS60 net AU50 and tied for CC#4 his photo #23342. Our grade is AU55. This is the plate coin, both obverse and reverse, for the die variety in Penny Whimsy and the Breen encyclopedia on the cents of 1793-1814. A great cent that comes with a great provenance. The attribution and Smith-Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Estimate Value $4,000 - UP
