Lot 184

1798 S-179 R2 Style II Hair, Small 8 PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Beautiful lustrous olive brown and steel with lots of lighter golden tan and steel faded down from mint color in protected areas on the obverse. Satiny mint frost covers this cent and the eye appeal is outstanding. No spots or stains, only a few microscopic contact marks. The best identifying marks, and they are faint, are a dull chip or nick in the field near the inner curl under the hair ribbon and a hairline scratch in the field before the lower half of the neck. M-LDS, Breen state III. There are numerous tiny lumps from die rust around the second S in STATES and narrow rim cud breaks over the D in UNITED and M in AMERICA. The subtle bulge in the field left of the lowest curl has not formed and the reverse is rotated 15-20 degrees CCW. The "Corrected E" feature (E in AMERICA over an inverted E) is obvious. A wonderful cent. Graded MS65 Choice and tied for CC#1 honors in the Noyes census, his photo #27633. Bland says AU55 and tied for CC#5 (not sure why Bland has such a significantly divergent opinion on this one). Our grade is MS62. The attribution and Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Pop 1; 4 finer at PCGS for the variety, 2 in 64, 1 in 65, 1 in 65+. Estimate Value $10,000 - UP
