1798 S-173 R3 Style II Hair, Small 8 PCGS graded MS61 Brown. Glossy medium to dark chocolate brown and steel with traces of frosty lighter steel brown and tan in protected areas, primarily on the reverse. Satiny mint frost covers the fields and protected areas. The surfaces are smooth and this cent offers excellent eye appeal. No spots or stains, only a few microscopic marks. A small puff of darker olive brown toning at the dentil tips over the second A in AMERICA is the best identifying mark, but it certainly doesn't qualify as a defect. M-LDS, Breen state VII. There is a strong cud break connecting RTY to the rim above, a fine die crack through the top of the L in LIBERTY to the rim at both ends, and die clashmarks on both sides. The reverse is rotated 50 degrees CCW relative to the normal head-to-foot orientation. The both sides of this cent are plated in Early American Cents and Penny Whimsy. Graded AU55 net AU50 and CC#5 in the Noyes census, his photo #20193. Bland says AU55 and tied for CC#5. Ted Naftzger graded this cent MS65 and it comes with a note from Doug Smith stating that this was the finest broken die example seen by Sheldon. Our grade is AU50+, very close to AU55. Comes with a very nice provenance. The attribution and Naftzger-Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Pop 1; 3 finer at PCGS for the variety, 2 in 62, 1 in 63.
