1798 S-157 R2 Style I Hair, Small 8 PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Very attractive frosty light steel brown and tan with tiny wisps of darker steel brown toning scattered over the upper part of the obverse. Traces of golden tan faded down from mint color can be found in a few protected places on the reverse and this cent offers excellent eye appeal. The surfaces are satiny and the only notable marks are a small planchet flake on the upright of the L in LIBERTY (as struck) and a dull nick on the cheek midway between the lips and ear lobe. MDS, Breen state III early, with microscopic lumps from die rust scattered over both sides and a light die crack through the tops of NITED to the dentils right of that D. Both sides are plated in George Clapp's 1931 reference on the cents of 1798 & 1899, and the obverse is plated in Dr. Sheldon's Early American Cents. In addition this is the plate coin for the variety in Breen's encyclopedia on early date cents. Noyes graded MS60 and CC#2, his photo #23387. Bland says MS60 and tied for CC#1 honors in the Breen/Bland census. Our grade is MS60 as well. A great cent that comes with a great provenance.
