Lot 16

1796 S-91 R3 Liberty Cap PCGS graded AU50. The "Wide Date" variety. Frosty light to medium chocolate brown and steel with a subtle hint of reddish brown toning in protected areas of the hair left of the neck. No roughness or verdigris, only microscopic marks. The notable ones are numerous barely visible planchet chips in the field behind the portrait, a tiny pinprick right of the Y in LIBERTY, and another between the U & N in UNITED. None of these marks is visible to the unaided eye and this cent offers excellent eye appeal. E-MDS, Breen state II, with a horizontal lump in the field left of the second lock of hair from the bottom. Nicely struck with the date, legends, and devices all strong. Our grade is EF40. Listed twice in the Noyes census. One listing has it graded EF45 net EF40 and CC#8, photo #57022. The other listing by Noyes has it graded EF40 net VF35 and CC#9, his photo #22001. Bland says EF40 and tied for CC#8. Whichever census you prefer, this is a very nice cent. The attribution and Koshkarian provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 4 finer, 2 in 53, 1 in 58, 1 in 66 for the variety. Estimate Value $10,000 - UP
