Lot 1380

1907. High relief, wire rim. NGC graded Proof 64. A nice untoned coin. Only 12,367 struck and this is considered America's most beautiful coin. The struggle to create these coins is one of the most historic battles to occur within thePhiladelphia Mint's walls. Famed sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens received the commission to redesign our country's gold coinage directly from President Teddy Roosevelt. Roosevelt had gone entirely around the Mint's staff of talented engravers and coiners. Naturally they formed a wall of resistance to coining these new, and conceptually crazy coins. They simply were not made for the modern coining presses. Furthermore, each High Relief gold coin took up to seven strikes to bring up these incredible designs. Eventually these designes were struck, but in limited numbers. These amazing High Relief coins are the closest to his original concept that most collectors can aspire to own. This splendid Gem will always turn heads and receive strong admiration from anyone who has the opportunity to see it. Pop 88; 78 finer at NGC. Estimate Value $35,000 - 40,000

Realized $30,550
