Lot 478

1798 S-187 R1 Style II Hair, Small 8 PCGS graded AU53, CAC Approved. Very attractive frosty dark steel brown and chocolate with traces of lighter steel brown in protected areas, mostly on the reverse. Satiny mint luster shows on both sides and this cent offers outstanding eye appeal. The only notable marks are a planchet chip (as struck) on the neck right of the curl and a diagonal nick to the right of the chip. M-LDS, Breen state IV, with numerous fine die cracks in the field before the portrait and a strong cud break that extends well inside the dentils before the face. Numerous raised lumps from die erosion show on the neck and the reverse die is failing over ICA. A neat die state. Graded EF45 net VF35 and tied for CC#15 in the Noyes census, his photo #29935. Bland says EF45 net EF40. Denis Loring graded this cent EF45. Our grade is EF45. The attribution and Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Pop 1; 6 finer at PCGS for the variety . Estimated Value $2,000-UP
