1798 S-166 R1 Large 8, Style II Hair PCGS graded MS63 Brown, CAC Approved. Frosty medium steel brown and light chocolate with lighter brown and tan faded down from mint color in protected areas on both sides. A very attractive cent, free of any notable marks or other defects. A swipe of slightly darker chocolate brown toning across the top of the obverse is the best identifying feature. MDS, Breen state IV, with a narrow rim cud over STA and a bold crack through the E in UNITED. The reverse is rotated 35 degrees CCW relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation. A bit softly struck on the bust tip and the opposing first A in AMERICA, a result of the rotated dies. Graded MS60 and tied for second finest known honors in both the Noyes and Bland condition census rankings of early date cents, Noyes photo #27577. Our grade is MS60+. A superior example of the Large 8 with Style II Hair variety. The attribution and Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Pop 1; 2 finer at PCGS for the variety, 1 in 63+, 1 in 64 . Estimated Value $10,000-UP

Ex Bowers & Merena 9/10/1990:19-Denis Loring 9/1990-Tom Reynolds Collection (includes the lot ticket).
