Lot 897

1856 N-17 R2 Italic 5 PCGS graded MS65 Brown. Lustrous bluish steel and light olive with mellowed mint red covering 15% of both sides. No spots or stains, only a few trivial marks. The notable marks are a shallow nick or planchet flake on star 6 and a thin, very light diagonal nick on the chin. The strike on the coronet over LIB is a bit soft, which is common on this variety, but everything else is nicely impressed. EDS, die state a, with fine diagonal die lines down to the right from the bottom of the outer section of the hair bun. The die lines from the dentils over ERIC are clear. Our grade is MS63, tied for CC#2 in the Grellman census. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; none finer at PCGS.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.
Ex Del Bland 7/19/1969-Jules Reiver, Heritage 1/24 2006:20649 (includes the Reiver collection envelope).
