Lot 889

1855 N-10 R1 Italic 55 PCGS graded MS64 Brown. "12-Star Obverse." Lustrous dark bluish steel and olive with faded mint color showing through in protected areas on the obverse while about 20% of the reverse shows faded mint red. The fields are smooth and the strike is sharp except for several low spots on the obverse. One of those low spots covers star 6 and effectively obliterates it creating the so-called "12-Star Obverse" die state. Other smaller low spots weaken the bust tip and star 1 while everything else is properly impressed. The best identifying marks are a dull, very light diagonal nick right of star 7, another under star 8, and a dull nick on the rim under the left edge of the 8 in the date. EDS but not the earliest, die state b late, with star 6 completely clogged and star 1 partially clogged. Our grade is MS62. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 5; 4 finer: 1 in 64+, 3 in 65.
Estimated Value $400-UP.
