Lot 880

1854 N-23 R2 PCGS graded MS64 Brown. Frosty medium brown and light chocolate with small peeps of faded mint red showing on both sides. The eye appeal of this cent is excellent and it looks flawless to the unaided eye, but a glass reveals a small spot of slightly darker toning on the cheek left of the ear, a small planchet chip (as struck) between the tops of the 1 & 8, and a shallow void on the rim at star 13 (also as struck). MDS, die state b. The die line at star 11 and the fine die lines from the dentils over UNITED are gone and fine die clashmarks show at the right top of the T in CENT. Our grade is MS60, tied with many examples for CC#6 in the Grellman census. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Pop 3; 1 finer in 66 at PCGS for the variety .
Estimated Value $400-UP.
