Lot 485

1795 S-76b R1 Plain Edge, Flipover Double Strike PCGS graded G6. Attractive glossy medium steel brown with darker chocolate brown toning in protected areas. The surfaces appear perfectly smooth to the unaided eye, but a glass reveals the fields and protected areas are covered with extremely fine granularity. No verdigris, and the only notable marks are a small planchet chip or nick on the lower half of the cap and a fine horizontal scratch through the bottom of the numerator in the fraction. MDS showing faint swelling in the field before the portrait. This cent was struck twice. The first strike was normal but slightly off center to the K-10 or K-11 position. Then the struck cent failed to eject from the coining chamber and flipped over before being struck again, this second strike being properly centered on the planchet. Undertype from the first strike shows on both sides. D-STA shows (weakly) over the top of the cap and at LIB, and the top of the cap shows more clearly at ED in UNITED. In addition there is a curved planchet clip that affects the dentils opposite the mouth and over ME in AMERICA. The date is strong and the legends are complete, although the numerator and adjacent U are faint. A neat multiple mint error. Our grade is G6+, close to VG7. The mint error features are not noted on the PCGS label.
Estimated Value $500-UP.
