Lot 383

1797 C-3a R3 Low Head with Plain Edge F15+. Sharpness near EF40 but covered with fine to moderate granularity under attractive glossy medium golden brown toning that fades to olive brown in protected areas. No verdigris and the only mark is a small nick in the field under the I in LIBERTY. Struck slightly off center to K-6 on a planchet cut from an off-center large cent. Undertype from the large cent is visible on both sides. On the obverse there is an arc of large cent dentils from the chin to the bottom of the neck. Fortunately there is more significant large cent undertype visible on the reverse. The ST from STATES on the off-center large cent is clearly visible at the T in CENT, and EN from CENT shows at the UN in UNITED. MDS, Manley state 2.0. The date is bold and the legends are clear.
Estimated Value $1,500-UP.
Ex Chris McCawley 5/3/2014.
