Lot 379

1797 C-1 R2 1 Above 1 variety F12. Struck over a 1795 Talbot Allum & Lee Cent. A few points sharper but there is a planchet chip in the field left of the bottom of the cap (as struck), and traces of microscopic roughness very well hidden in the hair right of the cap. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and very attractive, choice for the grade. MDS, Manley state 3.0, with swelling and die cracks on the obverse. This piece was struck on a cut-down 1795 TAL Cent. Traces of the undertype are visible left of the date. In addition there are two letters from the TAL Cent edge lettering clearly visible on the edge left of the date. The "EN" from CENT in "WE PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER ONE CENT" is present, and this edge lettering is limited to 1795-dated examples of TAL Cents. The half cent planchet was cut just a bit too close to the edge of the TAL CENT. A very rare "error." Weight 77.0 grains.
Estimated Value $800-UP.
Ex Tom Reynolds Ex Walter Scheer Collection.
