Lot 372

1794 C-8 R5 Liberty Cap facing right VF20. At least 5 points sharper but there are light contact marks on both sides, mostly on the face and neck. The best identifying mark is a tiny rim bruise over the R in LIBERTY. Rather glossy dark olive brown and steel. LDS Manley state 2.0. The die crack down through the second T in STATES extends through the wreath. The obverse is centered on the planchet while the reverse is misaligned slightly to K-4. A nice example in spite of the minor marks. Ranks among the top 10 known for the variety. Comes with a nice provenance. Weight 105.6 grains.
Estimated Value $5,000-UP.
Ex H. D. Gibbs, New Netherlands Coin Co., 11/28/1952-Robert Schonwalter, Stack's 1/21/2003:1092-Russ Butcher, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 9/20/2010:660 (both lot tickets included) Ex Walter Scheer Collection.
