1859 Washington "Pro Patria" Medal. Baker-268A. NGC graded MS-65 Red & Brown. Copper, 31 mm, first obverse with reeded edge. A pretty successful portrait of Washington and straightforward design by Robert Lovett. The medal was ordered by Philadelphia coin dealer Edward Cogan, and was issued in silver, copper, bronze, and white metal. According to the catalog, this first obverse die was stolen on December 14, 1859, and therefore making this type more interesting. Perfectly struck with prooflike surfaces on both sides. A needle sharp example with original violet-fiery toning.
Estimated Value $350 - 400.

Realized $411
