Lot 404

1817 N-16 R1 15-Stars Obverse NGC graded VF20. Attractive glossy medium brown and light chocolate. The surfaces are smooth and the only marks are a few minor rim bruises including a light one at star 3 on the "normal" side. EDS. A nice but relatively ordinary cent except for the Obverse Brockage error strike. The normal obverse impression was produced by the obverse die but the reverse was struck against the obverse of a previously struck cent that failed to eject from the coining chamber. The brockage (incuse) side is aligned with the normal obverse which indicates the previously struck cent did not move at all between strikes. All 30 of the stars are bold. A spectacular mint error. Our grade is VG10 (the incuse brockage side has the details of a significantly higher grade because the design elements are well protected--as on all brockage errors). The attribution and Brockage Mint Error feature are noted on the NGC label. Estimate Value $7,500 - UP
