Lot 187

1833 C-1 R1 PCGS graded MS64 Brown. Medium brown blending to light olive brown. Hints of faded mint color are visible in a few places on both sides. The only marks are a small, curved struck-through line in the field right of star 7 and a spot of fine carbon or crud left of the top of the H in HALF. Neither mark is visible without the aid of a good glass. EDS, Manley state 1.0 early, Breen state IV (which Breen says indicate the latest proof and earliest business strikes from this pair of dies). The fields on both sides are smooth and reflective. The die crack to star 2 is faint and does not extend to the rim, and there is a single set of die clashmarks on the reverse but no clashmarks on the obverse. We agree with the PCGS assessment of Business Strike, but the reflective fields are a big plus for this half cent. Must have been struck very shortly after the proofs of this date. Our grade is MS60+. The attribution and Green Tree Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 6; 4 finer, 2 in 64+, 1 in 65, 1 in 66 for the variety. Estimate Value $1,000 - UP
Ex Ellesmere 12/31/2003-The Green Tree Collection.
