Lot 12

1794 C-5a R4+ Small Edge Letters PCGS graded VF35. Slightly glossy olive brown and chocolate. The surfaces appear smooth to the unaided eye but a glass reveals extremely fine granularity in the fields and protected areas on both sides. No verdigris, and the only notable mark is a short scratch that is perfectly blended into the toning on the cap. Nicely struck EDS, Manley state 1.0. The dies are unclashed and the reverse rotated 70 degrees clockwise relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation. The obverse is slightly misaligned to the upper left but the reverse is properly centered on the planchet. The date and legends are all strong. A nice example that is at the lower end of the condition census for this tough die variety. Our grade is net VF20+. The attribution and Green Tree Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 4 finer, 1 in 40, 1 in 55, 1 in 63, 1 in 64+ for the variety. Estimate Value $5,000 - UP
Ex Bowers & Merena 6/22/2010-The Green Tree Collection.
