Lot 845

1921. Zerbe. NGC graded Proof 67. Fully white and a lovely gem. Only 200 minted for Farran Zerbe who was a major coin promoter during this era. When the Great War ended in 1918 and permanent peace was establised for the future of mankind Zerbe was one of many dealers behind the promotion of the Peace silver dollar. However, delays in design and production of the new Peace dollar thwarted Zerbe's peace promotions in the summer of 1921. Zerbe's deep connections at the Philadelphia Mint realized that Zerbe needed to be consoled and so along with the resurrection of the Morgan Dollar in 1921, a group of 200 1921 Morgan dollars were struck with Special strikes on polished dies but with regular planchets. The coins do not quite have the full brillance of earlier proofs, and heavy die polish lines are visible on the devices--as struck.

Perhaps 150 of these exist today and this one is the finest graded between NGC and PCGS as the sole Superb Gem of this prized special issue. Several months after these were sold out by Zerbe, the Peace dollars were finally ready to strike, and another page in history turned. We are proud to offer what is likely the Finest Known of this rare and desirable Special strike! Pop 1; none finer at NGC (PCGS # 7341) Estimate Value $50,000 - UP

Realized $64,625
