Lot 188

1839 N-4 R1 Silly Head PCGS graded MS66 Red & Brown, CAC Approved. Beautiful lustrous mint red fading to light steel brown and olive with half of both sides showing mellowed mint color. Satiny mint frost covers this cent, even the highest points of the devices, and the eye appeal is exceptional. A gem cent in every respect. The best identifying marks, and they are microscopic, are a tiny dimple on the cheek right of the lower lip and a pair of very light nicks in the field near the hair under the left side of star 8. MDS. The tiny dash at the dentil tips left of the 9 is gone but the similar dash at the dentil tips right of the 9 is still visible, although faint. A wonderful example of the "Silly Head" type of 1839 cent. Not seen by Noyes or Bland. Our grade is MS65+. The attribution and Ahumada provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; tied for finest RB graded at both services. PCGS #37232. Estimate Value $5,000 - UP
Ex American Numismatic Rarities 8/2004:94-Manuel Ahumada Collection.
