Lot 70

1816 N-2 R1 PCGS graded MS63 Red & Brown, CAC Approved. Lustrous light olive and steel with at least 10% of the mint color remaining on both sides. A beautiful, satiny cent. No spots or stains, only trivial contact marks. A light horizontal nick over the second 1 in the date is the best identifying mark. MDS with a rim cud break from star 8 to star 11 plus a smaller rim cud between stars 11 & 12. The reverse is rotated 30 degrees clockwise relative to the usual head-to-foot orientation. A very nice cent, most likely from the famous Randall Hoard of mint state cents that came to light shortly after the end of the US Civil War. Our grade is MS62+, close to MS63. The attribution and Koshkarian provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 3 finer, 1 in 64, 1 in 64+, 1 in 65 for the variety. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP
Ex American Numismatic Rarities OTC at ANA Convention 7/2005.
