Lot 338

1794 S-72 R2 Exact Head of 1795 F12. Slightly glossy medium to dark chocolate brown and steel with lighter steel brown toning on the devices. The surfaces appear smooth to the unaided eye, but a glass reveals microscopic granularity, mostly in the fields and protected areas. No verdigris and only a few trivial marks. The notable ones are a fine diagonal scratch left of the date, a tiny rim nick over the D in UNITED, another over the first S in STATES, and a nick on the top of the E in CENT. M-LDS, Breen state IV late. The die crack at TY is clear, a lump has formed on the brow lock, the die crack through the D in UNITED is clear, and a small retained cud break is rising at the base of that D. A decent example of the Exact Head of 1795 variety. Estimate Value $1,500 - UP
Ex Dr. Boyd E. Hayward, Bowers & Merena 9/22/1997:268-Chuck Heck Collection (lot ticket included).
