Lot 172

1798 S-166 R1 Style II Hair, Large 8 PCGS graded AU58+, CAC Approved. Glossy medium chocolate brown and steel with lighter golden tan faded down from mint color in protected areas and darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. This cent offers great eye appeal, but there is an extremely thin coating of lacquer that covers both sides. Just a hint of friction o the highpoints and a few microscopic contact marks. A tiny pinprick in the field close to the middle of the nose is the only notable mark, and it is barely visible. M-LDS, Breen state IV. The die crack that arcs through the lower left part of the reverse is strong and the right side of the E in UNITED is filled by a small internal cud break. Narrow rim cuds are visible over STA and the reverse is rotated 35 degrees CCW. Graded AU55 Choice and tied for CC#6 in the Noyes census, his photo #20789. Bland says AU55 and tied for CC#5. Our grade is AU55 as well. Comes with a very nice provenance. The attribution and Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Pop 1; 4 finer at PCGS for the variety, 1 in 62, 1 in 63, 1 in 63+, 1 in 64. Estimate Value $5,000 - UP
