Lot 170

1798 S-165 R4 Style II Hair, Large 8 PCGS graded VF20. Attractive glossy medium steel and light chocolate brown blending to medium chocolate in protected areas. A smooth cent with just a few contact marks, the only notable ones being two parallel diagonal nicks on the bust tip. Very rare LDS, Breen state III, with a strong die crack from the rim through the right bottom of the I in AMERICA and the wreath to the E in ONE where it fades away. This is the plate coin for the late die state reverse in the 1991 Noyes reference. Graded F15 and tied for CC#5 overall but finest of the late state in the Noyes census, his photo #23243. Bland says F15 and tied for CC#7 in his census. Our grade is F15 as well. An important cent for the die state specialist, and it comes with a great provenance. The attribution and Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Estimate Value $1,500 - UP
